Claim: Bush asked if Gore was so smart, why every internet address starts with W

Verdict: True.

  • The post: The X post from @spymain123 (August 28, 2026) posted a 2000 campaign clip and quoted Bush on Al Gore: "He's a good campaigner and he's very confident, so confident he thinks he invented the internet. But if the guy was so smart, how come every internet address starts with W?" (referring to the WWW subdomain prefix).
  • The riff: Bush used that joke on the stump in the last days of the 2000 race. UPI's Mark Kukis, writing from Columbia, Missouri, on October 28, 2000, quoted him at a Grand Chute, Wisconsin, rally that day:

“He is so confident about his abilities, he claimed he invented the Internet. But if he was so smart, how come all the Internet addresses start with ‘W’?”

  • UPI said he repeated the line at an airport rally in Columbia later that day, adding, "Not only one 'W' but three!" Campaign aides told UPI Bush wrote the line himself as a way to introduce a three-finger "W" salute. Associated Press and the New York Post printed the same riff that weekend. The clip in the X post is that Columbia airport stop: Missouri flags, an airliner on the tarmac, and Bush flashing the three-finger W.
  • He kept using it. C-SPAN's November 5, 2000 Tampa rally has him saying every internet address begins with W. In the first presidential debate in Boston on October 3, 2000, he used the same setup on the numbers fight:

“I’m beginning to think not only did he invent the Internet, but he invented the calculator.”

In plain language:

Yes. Bush used the www-starts-with-W joke on the 2000 trail, including the Columbia, Missouri, airport rally in the clip, and he used the same “invented the Internet” setup in the first debate. Whether he understood the WWW subdomain prefix is unclear.
