Mayor of Aurora, Colorado Mike Coffman stated that multiple apartment buildings have been seized by Venezuelan gangs (Tren de Aragua).
“There are several buildings actually under the same ownership, out of state ownership, that have fallen to these Venezuelan gangs. … They’ve in fact, have kind of pushed out the property management through intimidation and collected the rents.”
Coffman believes relocating the immigrants / gang members to this area was intentional and either the federal government or another party funded the operation. Apartment residents have reported being extorted of their rent money under threat of violence and local residents have stated they now fear taking their families to public places in the area. Shelby Wieman, spokesperson for Colorado Governor Jared Polis, downplayed the situation and insisted that violent crime in Aurora in down overall.
“We know violent crime in Aurora went down between 2022-2023, fully expect the data will show further declines for 2024,” Weiman said, “and the recent misinformation campaign threatens actual criminal investigations and could hurt the climate for small businesses in Aurora.”
