Mark Zuckerberg admitted that Facebook censored stories and content on the recommendations of the FBI in an interview with Joe Rogan on August 25, 2022.
During the interview Zuckerberg was asked specifically if Facebook censored the Hunter Biden Laptop story in the weeks before the 2020 presidential election and he confirmed that they did limit the spread and reach of the story. Meaning that a substantial amount of voters did not see the story in their Facebook feeds prior to them casting their votes. Mark Zuckerberg also stated he views the FBI as a credible law enforcement agency that continues to have a relationship with Facebook.
On August 26th, 2024, Zuckerberg also sent an document to the Committee on the Judiciary - US House of Representatives admitting to this in further detail, both specifically about COVID-19 as well as the Hunter Biden laptop story, saying it was in cooperation with the White House and the FBI.
In 2021, senior officials from the Biden Administration, including the White House, repeatedly pressured our teams for months to censor certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire, and expressed a lot of frustration with our teams when we didn’t agree.
In a separate situation, the FBI warned us about a potential Russian disinformation operation about the Biden family and Burisma in the lead up to the 2020 election. That fall, when we saw a New York Post story reporting on corruption allegations involving the then-Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s family, we sent that story to fact-checkers for review and temporarily demoted it while waiting for a reply. It’s since been made clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in retrospect, we shouldn’t have demoted the story.
