On May, 28th, 2016, the Cincinnati Zoo (@CincinnatiZoo), fatally shot and killed a ‘Critically Endangered’ Western Lowland Gorilla named Harambe, aged 17. ‘Extinct in the Wild’ is the next category which follows ‘Critically Endangered’. He was bred as part of a species survival breeding program. Harambe’s mother and one year old brother died in a chlorine gas accident while in captivity in 2002.
A mother’s 3 year old child fell into the gorilla habitat of the zoo by crawling through a barrier, and fell approximately 15 feet into the surrounding moat of water. The child was reportedly with Harambe for around 10 minutes before the zookeepers decided it was a life threatening situation. Additionally the zoo’s Director Thomas Maynard revealed that vets had taken viable sperm from Harambe in order to continue his genetic line.

Cincinnati Zoo Director Press Conference:
There is some reporting that the mother of the child (named Michelle Gregg), posted something on Facebook, but had deleted the post since then. There’s no way we can truly independently verify that she posted it. However, that purported facebook post is below.
A picture of both the mother and father is below.
Jane Goodall sent an email to the zoo director after the incident, that letter is featured below.
