There have been some posts online recently that Disney’s The Little Mermaid, is doing very well financially and that any detractors or people who are unhappy with the film are wrong.
One such claim is that it has had the 5th highest grossing memorial day weekend in history.
According to the-numbers for 4 day opening memorial day weekend, the top 10 films inflation adjusted are:
- Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End - 227 M
- The Lost World: Jurassic Park - 220 M
- X-Men: The Last Stand - 210 M
- Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - 197 M
- Top Gun: Maverick - 196 M
- Fast and Furious 6 - 164 M
- Bruce Almighty - 159 M
- The Day After Tomorrow - 154 M
- Pearl Harbor - 148.7 M
- X-Men: Days of Future Past - 148.3 M
the-numbers ranks The Little Mermaid as rank 17 in that category.
This film is only in the top 5 for All Movies / Opening for Memorial Day Weekend ( 4 day ), when NOT adjusted for inflation. Comparing financial success of films without adjusting for inflation is not a great way of comparing movie success.
the-numbers 4 Day Memorial Day Rankings:
The Little Mermaid, according to IMDB currently has a worldwide take of 197 M.
https://imdb.com/title/tt5971474/
The listed budget is 250 M.
A general rule of thumb for the marketing of any random Hollywood film is the same as the production budget.
It’s likely much larger for this film, as this film’s name is so widely recognizable.
So, therefore estimated marketing budget: 250 M.
Total conservative estimated budget: 500 M.
500 M - 200 M = 300 M
They are still missing over 300 M in money they need to make to break even.
Most films make their money back on the opening weekend and that’s it. It is the rare case that movies continue to make significant money on following weekends. It does happen, but it is rare.
It’s certainly possible that this film will make up the money it needs to, but the only way to know is to wait and see.
According to an article written by TheFilmik, the film would have to make over $750 M to be considered a success.
According to the-numbers, the movie’s rank among the applicable categories for it, are not that great so far.
