President Trump in an announcement via Truth Social on January 5th, 2023 said he would utilize the military to target the drug cartels on the southern border. He emphasized the thousands of Americans that die or are harmed by illegal fentanyl supplied by the cartels and the human smuggling that often accompanies it, as well as the estimated 100,000 plus Mexican civilians that have died or gone missing because of the cartels. His plan included military operations and financial strategies that would cut the cartel’s money from the global market. In addition, he emphasized that if neighboring countries or officials did not cooperate, he would expose every bribe, payoff and corruption. He finished by vowing to push Congress to legislate the death penalty for drug smuggling.
