In 2022 Brian Deese gave a White House Press Briefing where he was asked why the White House was redefining the word recession. In response to this he said:

As Secretary Yellen said on Sunday, two negative quarters of GDP growth is not the technical definition of a recession, it’s not the definition that economists have traditionally relied on.
Two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth has historically been the metric for determining if a country is in a recession.
Although many other companies/outlets posted the screenshot of Brian Deese’s quote from 2008, we were unable to independently verify the source of that quote or transcript. We reached out to multiple sites that wrote articles about this, and used the aforementioned screenshot, asking them where that quote is from, but none of them responded.
