On October 6, 2022, the Department of Defense released an announcement with regards to its intentions to rename over one thousand locations whose names are linked to the Confederate generals or related figures. In a 3-part report from The Naming Commission, the costs to enact this change have been totaled up to reach 62.5M USD.
In the Department of Defense announcement, they say:
“After 18 months of work, including extensive consultations with experts, historians, and the communities rooted in the bases in question, the Naming Commission has completed its analysis and has provided me with recommendations in its final report, including its plan pursuant to subsection ( c )( 4) of section 370 (the renaming plan) to remove from all assets of the DoD “the names, symbols, displays, monuments, and paraphernalia that honor or commemorate the Confederate States of America (commonly referred to as the ‘Confederacy’) or any person who served voluntarily with the Confederate States of America.”
The Naming Commission report and DOD announcement PDF files can be found below. The summary cost breakdown is on page 24 of Part III of the report.
